Long Time No Sea! 🌊 – Shaped by the Sea Roundup

Hi, Hola, Caio,

The last few months have been a little bit manic, I’m not entirely sure where to start.

Let’s start with courses, doing each of the modules for Officer of the watch has been incredible, I’ve learnt a lot. Although the process is amazing, actually passing the exams is another story.

From a young girl I struggled with written work, not because I wasn’t intelligent but because my brain worked differently to others. I’ve always known I processed words differently and as I got older I thought it was becoming less but it seems I got better at coping with it.

So in the progress of doing these exams I knew the content but answering the question asked was my biggest issue. With some reflection and thought I decided to get tested as an adult for dyslexia something as I child I knew I had, but our brains cognative function develops as we age.

So with a quick assessment I was re-diagnosed and some support was awarded my IAMI ( the examination board for MCA exams).

The last of courses almost rounded up and exam date in hand, there’s only one thing for it, hit the books…

No, I’m not telling the world my exam date… too scary.

New Beginning

I’ve recently joined a new vessel as First Mate, the exact position I was looking for when looking for a new role. Wahheyyy!

Joining a new crew can be daunting but this bunch where welcoming and full of laughs from the get go. I joined the vessel the day of haul out (coming out of the water) for known boat folks. I found this a great time to join a new vessel as most things are being taken apart and put back together, so lots of opportunity to learn.

She’s a beautiful sloop, with a good sailing history and that’s about all I can say about her.

Settling into a new role and a new yacht takes time the process is something I’ll share along the way.

Back where it began

Being back in Palma has been a dream. If you’ve read previous blogs you’ll know I started yachting in palma back in early 2019. The city hasn’t changed much since then, museum bar isn’t the same vibe but that’s ok.

With new restaurants on the seen and the paseo still not being finished! If you know you know! It’s very much the same old palma, with a yachtie hangout on almost every street and the welcoming friendly faces of my personal favourite La llonja, it’s good to be home.

The best bit about being back in town is catching up with friends. Often you don’t see people you love and care about for months sometimes years when you live on a floating object.

Catching up with friends I did my yacht master with, with old racing pals, even some special family and friends came to visit. Having the world of yachting collid with some of family was lovely.

My little sister visiting Mallorca with her friend for a break for everyday life at home. Introducing her to my lifestyle and the wonderful people I spend my time with outside of work was so very special. Spending time with my sister and some of my closest friends warmed my heart and brought me so much more joy that I would ever have imagined.

A man in casual wear walks on a sunny plaza with palm shadows. Historic stone building and colorful buildings in the background. Bright blue sky.
Friends and Family 🤍

I can’t describe how excited I am to go back to sea. It’s been too long since I was last on a passage. I miss the sea air, the salt in my hair. The feeling of being at one with the sea.

Being shaped by the sea is more than the blog.

It’s me. It’s a way of life.

As always keep smiling, laughing and loving the sea.

Mel
